  1. The applicant’s Head of Music,
  2. his/her present employer; or
  3. a recognized professional music or theatre practitioner, or head of the organization, where the applicant has been serving as a Music Director or Performer. It would be an advantage for the candidates to have also majored in the appropriate instrument (voice, piano, organ, orchestral instrument, conducting and music directing) in their first degree.

  It is an added advantage for candidates for:

  • M.A. Music Education to have done Music Education in their Bachelor’s degree or NCE or Diploma.
  • M.A. African music and Musicology should have majored in African music in their Bachelor’s degree.
  • M.A. Theory and Composition to have majored in Composition, Music Education, Performance or African Music in their first degree.
  • M.A. Composition should submit folios of at least three (3) of their original compositions along with either audio CDs or DVDs or both of their performances.
  • M.A. Musical Instrument Technology would have majored in Musical Instrument Technology or African Music in their first degree.
  Such candidates will also be required to submit to the Departmental Postgraduate Studies Committee photographs of as many instruments recently constructed by them as possible and assessments of instruments recently repaired by them and certified.

General Entry Requirements:

The candidate must possess a good Honours Degree in Education. An M.Ed. candidate with a first Degree other than B.A (Ed.), B.Sc. (Ed.) or B.Ed. must possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or evidence both of high attainment in the proposed area of study for the Masters of Education Degree and also of breath of study shown to the satisfaction of the Faculty by such things as existing qualifications, publications etc.

At least two years teaching experience judged appropriate for the Faculty of Education or at least three years’ experience in Education other than as a teacher, judged appropriate for this purpose by the Faculty. A candidate with a second class upper or above is exempted from this provision. Candidates with B.Sc (Ed) or B.Ed Degrees awarded by the University of Jos or any approved University may be qualified for admission to read M.Ed (Curriculum) and M.Sc (Ed) Educational Technology.

The criteria for admission into the M.Sc.Ed programme will be as follows:
1. All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.
2. Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees from an approved university must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a CGPA of 3.0/5.0 in Computer Science or Computer Science Education or Related Courses for an academic programme.

Entry Requirements

1. Master of Science (M.Sc.) Civil Engineering

All candidates must have five (5) O' Level passes at credit level in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any one from Biology, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Economics, Additional/Further Mathematics, Geography and Building Construction.
Other basic admission requirements shall be:
1. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree with at least a Second-Class Honours or its equivalent in the relevant Engineering field from a recognized University.
2. Candidates having a Bachelor's degree with at least a Second-Class Upper Honours or its equivalent in allied fields from a recognized university and a Postgraduate Diploma, (PGD), with at least an Upper Units pass in the relevant Engineering field from a recognized university.
3. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree with at least a Third Class in the relevant Engineering field and a PGD with at least an Upper Credit Pass in relevant Engineering field from a recognized university.
4. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree with at least a Third Class in the relevant Engineering field with at least five (5) years post qualification experience in the relevant field of engineering practice.
5. Candidates having HND with at least a Lower Credit pass in the relevant Engineering field and a PGD with at least an Upper Credit pass from a recognized University.

Note: Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Civil Engineering A candidate seeking admission into an M.Phil/Ph.D any of the Engineering programmes must in addition to the O' Level requirements possess a Master's degree in the relevant Engineering field. M.Phil/Ph.D candidates are in addition required to have returned a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or a Cumulative Score Average (CSA) of 60% and above in the final assessment result for the Master's Degree as well as 60% and above in the Research Project. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR M.Phil/Ph.D:

To qualify for admission into the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme, a candidate must possess a good master’s degree in a subject relevant to his/her intended area of specialization. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR M.Phil/Ph.D:

Applicants shall normally hold a first degree with a minimum of a second class lower of the University of Jos or any other University in Microbiology, Biochemistry or relevant allied courses.

Candidates with third class degree of the University of Jos or any other University in Microbiology, Biochemistry or relevant allied courses with three years post qualification experience may be admitted after obtaining a postgraduate diploma in Microbiology with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale and 3.00 on a 4 point scale. The eligibility of such candidates for admission shall be determined by the Postgraduate School Board in consultation with the Department.

Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology or any other relevant allied disciplines with a minimum of Lower Credit (CGPA of 3.50) of the University of Jos or any other recognized University with one year work experience may be admitted.

Candidates with PASS degree, HND or PASS postgraduate Diploma do not qualify for admission.

4. Submit a concept proposal of not less than 5 pages in the applicant’s area of specialization.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) PROGRAMME IN SOCIAL WORK:

1. Candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirement of the University of Jos which is 5 o’level credits including English Language Mathematics, and any two social science subjects.
2. A Third Class (Hons.) Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related disciplines awarded by an approved and accredited University.
3. HND and/or professional qualifications cognate to Social Work from a recognized institution with not less than Upper Credit.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN SOCIAL WORK (MSSW):

The criteria for admission into the MSSW programme are as follows:
1. Candidate must satisfy the matriculation requirement for B.Sc. Social Work programme of the University of Jos which is 5 O’level credits including, English Language, Mathematics, and any two social science subjects.

METHODS OF APPLICATION:

All matters concerning method of application and eligibility for admission into the M.Sc. (Architecture) programme shall generally be as prescribed in Regulation 1(1)-(13) of the P.G. School Regulations.

A candidate shall be deemed eligible to seek admission into the M.Sc. (Arch) programme of the Department of Architecture if he is a graduate and holder of the B.Sc. (Arch) of the University of Jos or of other Universities recognized by Senate of the University of Jos. Generally, graduates of the Department of Architecture of University of Jos who obtained a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in their B.Sc. examination shall be deemed automatically admissible into the M.Sc. (Arch) programme subject to fulfilment of the necessary requirements of application to the Post Graduate School as prescribed in Regulation 1 of the P.G. School Regulations, unless, for the time being, such students choose to defer the process. (This provision for automatic admission is necessitated by the requirement of the possession of the M.Sc. degree in Architecture normally preferred by the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) as a precondition for registration with the professional body).

Notwithstanding the provision in Regulation 1(a) above, a candidate who is a graduate of the Department of Architecture of the University of Jos and of any other University recognised by the University of Jos in the self-same regard, and who has so graduated with a third class in the B.Sc. (Arch) programme shall nevertheless be deemed eligible for admission into the M.Sc. (Arch) programme, provided he or she:

Shall have had at least two years Post-B.Sc. Graduation in Professional Practice and acquired professional practice experience with a duly registered firm of architects upon which a duly completed professional logbook and portfolio will be assessed by a selection jury in the Department of Architecture of the University of Jos; and Shall, before or thereafter, have obtained a post-graduate diploma in Architecture of the University of Jos with a third class degree and average score of 60% (as part of the application requirements); Shall have successfully undergone the prescribed practical oral examination comprising presentation of portfolio of work done during the professional practice training period under reference above, including the final PGDArch Project, before a jury constituted by the Department for that purpose; and Shall have been recommended for admission into the M.Sc (Arch) programme by the said jury.

Any other qualifications possessed by applicants, which may, from time to time, be considered by the Department as falling into the purview of eligible admission requirements for the M.Sc. (Arch) programme.

GENERAL REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE (M.PHIL./PH.D.) ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMME

• PREAMBLE:

The Regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Jos governing higher degrees and diplomas hereinafter referred to as “Postgraduate School,” or simply “P.G. School Regulations,” shall generally be deemed to also govern the M.Phil./Ph.D. (Architecture) programme of this Department, except in certain areas demanding unique provisions on account of peculiar circumstances of the profession. Such provisions shall be duly highlighted.

• ELIGIBILITY (ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS)

Except as specifically stated hereunder, all candidates must satisfy the eligibility and admission requirements for postgraduate students as prescribed by the Postgraduate School and as updated from time to time. Candidates to be admitted into the MPhil Architecture programme must possess all the following qualifications.

A Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Jos or other university recognised by the Senate of the University of Jos. Holders Of Master’s degrees in closely related disciplines such as landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, building, et cetera, may be considered based on the relevance of the proposed research to architecture and positive recommendation by the Department.

A Cumulative Score Average (CSA) of not less than 55% (or the equivalent 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA on a 5-point scale) at Master’s level. In addition, the candidate must score a minimum of 55% in the research project or thesis submitted for award of the Master’s degree.

A credit score in “O” Level English Language.

DESCRIPTION OF AREAS OF SPECIALISATION

• ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY

Architectural Technology is an area of study that enquires into how buildings are made and how they are controlled in order for them to be able to attain optimal performance for human comfort. Possible areas of further specialized research development may include: theory of perspectives in evolution and use of new materials, construction and building maintenance; structural and building systems integration and related data structures; artificial and natural lighting in buildings; acoustics and sound energy communication in buildings, heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration in buildings; electrical and mechanical installations and distribution in buildings, energy conservation (often) supported by computer analysis. Also typical cognate courses in other related fields in the University will include heat transfer; thermal dynamics, meteorology and statistics.

Research knowledge acquired here is expected to be used in generating information that will help architects, builders and planners to plan, design and build buildings which are more sensitive to the dictates of the physical environments and respond more effectively to new materials and technology of construction for the comfort of users.

• BEHAVIOURAL ARCHITECTURE

Behavioural studies in Architecture considers various interactions, which take place between people and their physical surroundings (within the context of urban and environments).

The people under consideration here include both individuals and groups of people, (together with their accompanying characteristics such as ethnicity, culture gender, age and other physical characteristics) which manage and use the environments. The urban and environments includes land uses such as housing, commerce, agriculture, institutional complexes and other open spaces, as well as transportation networks and work settings such as hospitals, schools, prisons, house of worship etc.

The focus of this area of study is on the way and manner in which people use, alter, respond to, and manipulate the buildings and other physical settings they occupy and work in and the behavioural/psychological impact such interactions have on the people’s wellbeing, health, assessment of their preferences and needs, etc. An understanding of all these issues (it is hoped) will be important to the advancement of architectural theory and practice and the formulation of public policy in the management of the built environment and a well-orchestrated system of urban environmental planning of our otherwise unplanned cities in Nigeria.

• ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY AND THEORY

The study of historical and theoretical issues in architecture is concerned with critically examining the trend of, and development of architecture from the earliest times to the present. It seeks to develop new knowledge and methods for the promotion of a critical inquiry and insight into the varied factors and influences that have shaped architecture generally and design decisions over time.

Historical inquiry involves undertaking a historical account of, and carrying out a critique of the intentions of the producers of buildings as well as the users in relation to the conditions and contexts of that time, including the constraints of their respective tasks and involvements.

The primary objective of this inquiry is to ascertain and assess the basis of documentary research, the actual contexts within which a given building ensemble or architectural phenomenon would have evolved in its time and place, as well as the context in which it would have experienced any subsequent changes over time. Areas of concentration may include eras and epochs in architectural development such as ancient renaissance baroque, rococo byzantine pre-industrial, modern postmodern, futurist etc as well as specific traditional architecture of various human communities with emphasis on African traditional architecture.

Theoretical studies in architecture, on the other hand, include theory building, formulation of new constructs, interpretations and meaning in the built environment intended to describe and explain architecture. It also includes looking into factors affecting the design process and the views held by those involved with the production and use of designed environments. In addition, new methodologies and theoretical positions grounded on a critical examination of past and present body of knowledge in various aspects of architecture may be advanced for the purpose of working out and testing a new theoretical basis for the discipline of architecture. These methodologies and theoretical positions may also be advanced for purposes of promulgating a new aesthetic or new genre of architectural production, or even for purposes of propounding a new conceptual framework for interpreting both past and contemporary works of architecture.

By examining and discriminating among the various methodologies and points of view that attempt to describe and explain our knowledge of architecture, students will become better equipped to determine the appropriate method or approach to be adopted in their own inquiry into the history and theory of architecture. Specialisation in the area of historical and theoretical studies in architecture is expected to prepare the individual for a productive academic career in teaching and conducting research in architectural history and theory, or for creative work in the architectural profession and/or in historic preservation.

• DESIGN AND COMPUTATION

Design and Computation has to do with computers and computerization in Architecture and knowledge-based systems. It is an area of specialisation in doctoral work in architecture concerned with generating the architect’s own response to the all-important impact of information technology on physical developmental processes in the rapidly globalising world. The idea here is the employment of computers as a new design thinking medium offering capabilities that can overcome some of the limitations encountered by human beings in the use of the traditional modes of thinking. It is an attempt at replacing human thought with the mechanisation of information technology systems represented by the computer for purposes of solving architectural problems at the theoretical plane of planning conceptualisation and practical realisation of the physical processes. It involves the representation of the built environment or artifacts in a form capable of supporting the automated analysis and simulation of the environment’s performance.

Specific areas of concentration may include: design theory and methods and computer-aided applications. It further includes work in knowledge-based expert systems and approaches to graphics mapping and design that are complemented by cognitive studies of the way in which designers undertake specific tasks; computer-aided education, simulation, solids modelling, geometric modelling, interactive programming, knowledge-based design systems, and data base for design; facilities management systems based on interactive evaluation, graphic super computers and access to central computer facilities.

Registration with recognised professional bodies may be considered as an added advantage. The programme is designed for candidates with Bachelor Degree in Estate Management and Valuation. Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics

The candidate for admission into postgraduate diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics programme must be a first-degree holder in relevant disciplines from any recognized University with a minimum of third class or pass with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience. 1. GENERAL

The Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Jos offers a doctorate programme of research and course work leading to a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry.

Admission Requirements for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Veterinary Anatomy

1. The candidate must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from a recognized Veterinary Council of Nigeria-accredited/approved Veterinary programme
2. In addition to the above, the candidate must also possess a Master’s degree (MSc) in Veterinary Anatomy from a recognized University and must have obtained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 5-grade point scale, or 3.0 on a 4-grade point scale in the Master’s degree programme OR
3. External candidate must have undergone a successful conversion from the MPhil/PhD programme.

Candidates applying for MSc Programme shall hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Pharmaceutical Microbiology or relevant allied degree Programme from University of Jos or any degree awarding institution recognized by the senate of University of Jos.

Candidates from other fields other than Veterinary Medicine with a Third-class degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, and other relevant allied courses from National Universities Commission (NUC) accredited University, and with a minimum of three-year post qualification experience may be admitted after obtaining a postgraduate diploma in Microbiology with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale and 2.5 on a 4-point scale. The eligibility and acceptance of such candidates for admission shall however be determined by the Postgraduate School and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Postgraduate Committee, University of Jos.
3. Candidates applying for Doctoral Programme must have a minimum of 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and any other relevant science subject at O’ Levels. Applicant shall obtain a minimum CGPA of 4.0 at Master’s degree in Microbiology or any other relevant allied courses. Candidates who did not meet the entry requirement of minimum CGPA of 4.0 at Master’s degree may however be admitted after undergoing M.Phil/PhD programme, in which he/she must score a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale and 2.5 on a 4-point scale. The eligibility and acceptance of such candidates afterwards for PhD shall however be determined by the Postgraduate School and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Postgraduate Committee, University of Jos.

To be eligible for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma program, candidates must be first- degree holders in Zoology or any other science related discipline from any recognized University, or holders of HND with minimum of Lower Credit in animal production or animal health.

Entry Requirements for Master`s Program (MSc):

Prospective candidates for MSc (Theriogenology) must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or its equivalent, while those for MSc (Animal health and production) must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) / Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) in Animal Science or Animal Production. An applicant must have obtained a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 5 point scale or 2 on a 4 point scale at undergraduate level.

Entry Requirements for Doctorate (MPhil/PhD) Program

Prospective candidates for the Ph.D degree (Theriogenology or Animal Health and Production) program should possess a good Master of Science (MSc) degree in MSc (Theriogenology) or Animal Health and Production, Animal Science or Animal Production as the case may be. Such degrees should must have been obtained from the University of Jos or any recognized University with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 5 point scale.

Departmental Admission Requirement:

To qualify for admission into the M.Sc. programme of the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, the applicants must have obtained Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from this university (University of Jos) or any other university recognised by the Senate.

For PhD programme, a candidate shall have obtained an M.Sc. degree after passing relevant taught courses and research from this university (University of Jos) or its equivalent from any other university recognized by the Senate in relevant disciplines (Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Anaesthesiology and Veterinary Radiology) with a CGPA of at least 3.5 (5.0 scale) or 3.0 (4.0 scale).

Requirement for Award of the Degree:

To qualify for the award of M.Sc. degree, a student must have completed and passed courses totalling a minimum of 25 credit units excluding Thesis of 12 units, presented and passed the two seminars.

For a PhD award, a student must have completed and passed all the course work of 45 credit units, presented and passed the two seminars, and also written and passed a dissertation of 18 credit units.

This program is designed at the MSc. level to provide an initial level of specialization for veterinarians intending to become anaesthetists and Wildlife practitioners, instructors in anaesthesiology, pain management and Wildlife. Researchers or those intending to proceed with a Ph.D. in this specialty. Recent developments in which a lot more individuals, Institutions, Zoos, Wildlife Conservation establishments are acquiring and maintaining a large number and variety of wildlife has resulted in a dramatic rise in the number of such cases presented for and needing veterinary attention. In all these situations wildlife immobilization is frequently encountered. Even though an increasing number of these cases are encountered, any form of training in wildlife practice generally, must entail a trip out of the country.
